Two brothers who armed themselves ‘with a stick’ and attacked a man after a stone was thrown at their car have been spared jail.

Decklan, 27, and Cameron Davenport, 21, were driving to their parent’s house in Sale on October 27, 2023 when a confrontation with a cyclist turned violent.

Minshull Street Crown Court heard the man on the bicycle ‘made remarks’ and hurled a stone at their vehicle, causing damage.

Prosecuting, John Richards said the pair followed the man to Kingston Close in Sale – a dead-end street – and confronted him.

The cyclist, who did not provide a statement, emerged with a baseball bat and was seen swinging it towards the car, the court heard. The brothers then got out and struck him with a stick, leaving him with a 10cm head wound that required hospital treatment.

Judge Maurice Greene said CCTV footage of the clash showed the victim was also ‘looking for trouble’, but told both Decklan and Cameron Davenport they had behaved in a ‘thuggish’ way.

The court heard Decklan also drove the car ‘pretty much at’ the victim. Judge Green warned: “It could have ended up with very serious charges.”

Defending, Ellen Shaw said there had been ‘some provocation’ before the incident, but the pair had ‘taken it too far’.

Shaw said: “On a different day they may well have acted more appropriately.”

Judge Greene told the defendants that driving away would have been the ‘sensible thing to do’, adding: “Had there not been CCTV they would not be here.”
