Playing in your mom’s closet is part of growing up. I still have a picture of my 2-year-old self dressed in a pink Barbie swimsuit with a pair of my mom’s high heels on my little feet. As an adult, I still love raiding my mom’s closet every now and then for the perfect earrings or outfit. The same is likely true for the royal family. Insiders predict that Princess Charlotte, 10, will participate in the beloved tradition of borrowing (read: stealing) her mother’s clothes one day too. Especially because, like every style queen, Charlotte knows the value of re-wearing cherished items.

Danielle Stacey, royal correspondent for Hello! and Laura Sutcliffe, fashion and beauty editor for Hello!, recently chatted about the treasure trove that is Kate Middleton’s closet — and how likely her daughter Princess Charlotte will inherit it someday.

“With looks like this, do you think Catherine is thinking about future generations, and thinking ‘maybe I can pass this down to Charlotte?’” Stacey asked Sutcliffe in an article for Hello!
“I think she must do,” Sutcliffe responded. “Can you imagine being Princess Charlotte and having Catherine as your mother and having all of those clothes that you could borrow potentially – handbags, shoes, the incredible jewelry that’s passed down through generations?”
It would be amazing. And it would follow tradition, not just of mothers and daughters everywhere, but also royal tradition, as Middleton herself has worn pieces by her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. Not to mention, Princess Charlotte has worn vintage accessories as well, like the red shoes she wore during a royal tour of Germany and Poland in 2017, which seem to be the pair once worn by her uncle Prince Harry.

Earlier this year, the Princess of Wales toured a clothing factory in South Wales, where she revealed that she “archived” the clothes worn by Princess Charlotte and her sons Prince George, 12, and Prince Louis, 7, who she shares with husband Prince William.
“It’s so lovely to reuse the things that are well made,” she commented.
It’s not too much of a stretch then to imagine Middleton saving her own well-made clothes for her daughter to wear one day!
Another item Princess Charlotte supposedly has her eye on? The iconic Spencer Tiara once worn by Princess Diana and currently being held by Diana’s brother Charles, the current Earl Spencer. In 2021, a royal insider told New Idea, “William is close with his uncle and has asked if his mother’s namesake tiara can be given to Charlotte someday. William is quite aware the earl has daughters of his own, but the two have agreed that Diana’s iconic piece belongs to her first granddaughter.”
Another insider told the publication that Princess Charlotte was “giddy with excitement” about inheriting the “treasure.” Who wouldn’t be?
Princess Charlotte already seems just as excited about fashion as her mom and late grandmother before her. We can’t wait to see if she will be allowed to wear any of their beloved fashion accessories when she gets older!
