The Royal Cinema at Maney Corner in Sutton Coldfield has been shortlisted for the British Independent Film Awards Cinema of the Year 2025
A refurbished Birmingham cinema which reopened after four years of being mothballed is in the running for a prestigious industry award.
Royal Cinema in Sutton Coldfield, which was formerly an Empire and before that an Odeon, has been shortlisted for the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) Cinema of the Year 2025.

Then its owners, Empire Cinemas, went into administration in July 2023 leaving fears the cinema would not reopen again.

Now the Royal needs your vote online as it seeks to win the BIFA cinema of the year award.

Asked on why people should vote for the Royal Cinema in the BIFA awards, Des said: “I just really think it’s a community cinema.
“The message I’m trying to get out there is be proud of their cinema.
“Please vote in the cinema awards to give us a bit of recognition of what we have achieved in the last 12 months. It’s a well-loved sinema.
“The award is not just for the Royal Cinema but the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield.
“When you go to a multiplex it’s the owners’ cinema, but this cinema belongs to everybody in the town.
“Be proud of it, embrace it and create memories.”
