Lidl has issued a warning about one of its products due to the possible presence of salmonella. The supermarket chain is now recalling its Braemoor Red Hen Ham and Cheese Chicken Kievs, sold in boxes of four, as they pose a possible health risk to consumers.

Although common, salmonella is a bacterial infection that may cause various uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms. Typically, these include diarrhoea, fever, and stomach cramps, which may persist for days or even a week.

In severe cases, the Mayo Clinic cautions that salmonella may cause life-threatening complications if the infection extends beyond the intestines. Nonetheless, such cases are extremely rare.

A recall notice from Lidl reads: “Lidl GB is recalling the above-mentioned product due to the potential presence of Salmonella which may cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms.

“If you have bought the above product, we advise you not to eat it. Customers are asked to return this product to the nearest store where a full refund will be given.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your cooperation.” According to Manchester Evening News, customers can return the product to their local Lidl store for a full refund, with or without a receipt.

The recall specifically affects all 500g boxes of the Braemoor Red Hen Ham and Cheese Four Chicken Kievs, which have a best-before date of October 2026 and a batch code of 25190B.

Lidl has apologised for any inconvenience caused by the recall and has expressed gratitude to shoppers for their cooperation. Customers seeking further information on the recall can contact the Lidl customer care team at customer.care@lidl.co.uk or on 0203 966 5566.

Details of the Braemoor Red Hen Ham and Cheese 4 Chicken Kievs affected by the recall are also available here. A message on Lidl’s website also adds: “At Lidl, your safety is important to us, which is why we have strict procedures in place to ensure the highest quality and safety of all our products.”

Potential symptoms of salmonella

Humans usually become infected with salmonella after consuming contaminated water or food. According to the Mayo Clinic, this can give rise to several uncomfortable symptoms, including:

  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Blood in the stool
  • Diarrhoea
  • Stomach (abdominal) cramps

Most people don’t require medical treatment for a Salmonella infection. However, infants, young children, older adults or anyone with a weakened immune system should contact a health provider if symptoms last more than a few days.

High fevers, bloody stools and severe signs of dehydration also indicate that medical consultation may be required.
