Two arrests have been made after the victim died in hospital

A murder investigation has been launched after a man was stabbed in Newton Heath.
Police and ambulance crews were called to Gilmerton Drive in Newton Heath at around 7.25pm on Friday (August 29) to reports of a disturbance.
Greater Manchester Police later confirmed a man in his 20s had been taken to hospital with serious injuries. The force said he suffered stab wounds.
The victim sadly died in hospital on Saturday morning (August 30). A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning.
A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. He also remains in custody for questioning.

Chief Inspector Peter Crowe from GMP’s City of Manchester district said: “Two men have been swiftly arrested after a man was fatally stabbed last night on Gilmerton Drive. They remain in police custody for questioning.
“This morning, the victim has sadly died in hospital from his injuries. We send our deepest condolences to his loved ones, and they remain in our thoughts.
“We understand this tragic incident will have shaken our communities and we want to reassure people that we will not tolerate violence and use of weapons on our streets. We will not stop until we find offenders and bring them to justice.
“Our residents deserve to feel safe to go about their daily lives without fear. Over the following days the community will see an increased policing presence in this area; we will be out to offer support as they would rightly expect us to.”
Neighbours spoke of their shock following the horror stabbing on Friday evening (August 29). There was a heavy police presence, with a police helicopter seen circling the area for at least an hour. The road remained cordoned off while officers were still at the scene.

One neighbour said that police were at the scene from around 7.30pm. She said: “From what I have heard someone was stabbed.
“I hate living round here, things like this are always happening. I hate it.”
Another woman said: “It’s disgusting round here, something’s always happening.”
A little boy stood next to her watching said: “This is a dangerous street.”
Another neighbour said that armed police were at the scene earlier. “All I’ve heard was that someone’s been stabbed,” they said.
