Beachgoers at Can Pere Antoni beach in Palma were left stunned on Friday when a massive shark washed up on the shore — already dead. The discovery quickly drew a crowd who rushed to see the creature up close.

Snaps shared online show the shark’s body bearing a huge bite mark, fuelling speculation it may have been attacked by an even bigger predator. Some couldn’t resist posing for selfies with the carcass before officials moved in.

The tide is thought to have carried the remains onto the beach, turning a quiet afternoon into an unexpected spectacle. Swimmers and tourists said they’d never been so close to such a fearsome animal.

The shock find has reignited debate about sharks in Balearic waters. Just weeks ago, experts unveiled plans to step up protection for sharks and rays around the islands, warning that many species are in decline.

The proposals call for tighter controls on fishing and measures to protect fragile marine habitats. Officials say the goal is to keep the ecosystem in balance — and make sure future encounters with sharks don’t just happen when they wash up dead.
