Prince Harry is preparing to reunite with his father King Charles for the first time in 20 months, but according to a former royal butler, Prince William is unlikely to be part of the meeting.
Speaking on behalf of Fruity King, Grant Harrold, who worked for King Charles when he was Prince of Wales, suggested William has little interest in any reunion with Harry. “I think there is something going on with William and Harry, but I’m not too sure on what.”
But, he revealed what he believes William’s true feelings on the matter are. “I think William doesn’t want to be involved in this at all. But it is all speculation, he could well be happy about it. But we know that it has damaged their relationship as brothers and maybe William feels it’s better for Harry to get on with it. I imagine William won’t be involved if there is a reunion of any kind. It would only be between Harry and Charles,” Harrold said.
Prince Harry is expected back in London on September 8, the third anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s death, to attend the WellChild Awards, a charity he has supported for years. His visit coincides with the King being in the UK without overseas travel plans until later in the month, creating a window for father and son to meet.
The two have not seen each other since February 2024, and before that, January 2023.
The meeting follows quiet efforts between Buckingham Palace and the Sussex camp. Harry’s chief communications officer, Meredith Maines, recently met with the King’s press secretary, Tobyn Andreae, in London, along with Sussex press aide Liam Maguire. The talks reportedly covered health updates for the King and ways to avoid scheduling conflicts between royal and Sussex projects.
A US source told the Mirror, “It’s clear there is now a determination on both sides to make this happen. Nobody is pretending the wider family issues have been resolved, but this is about beginning with Charles and Harry.
“For the first time in a long time, there’s a genuine sense that reconciliation is within reach. Prince Harry’s team and the Palace have opened a line of communication, and there is every hope that father and son will see one another when the Duke returns to London in September,” they said.

The source added, “After 20 months apart, and with the King continuing his treatment, the feeling is that the time is right to take that step. This is not about grand gestures or set-piece meetings – it’s about a simple face-to-face conversation between a father and his son. The priority is privacy and dignity, but also ensuring the door stays open for further dialogue. As for Harry and William, though, any chance of reconciliation between them has been rejected out of hand.”
While King Charles is said to be open to repairing relations, Prince William remains wary. Another source said, “William feels Harry has repeatedly chosen public exposure over private resolution and that the Royal Family can’t keep being dragged into the headlines every time there’s a new contract to promote.
“The issue with Harry, as well as Meghan, is one of trust. Ever since moving to North America, they have eroded all confidence in their ability to keep things or their criticisms private. For there to be any chance of moving forward, that trust has to be rebuilt, and Team Sussex knows the onus is on them,” the insider dished.
Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, will not be joining him in the UK. She plans to remain in California with their two children, Archie and Lilibet, both of whom have not been seen by King Charles since 2022.
