ConsumptionEuropean Union’s Consumption of Ball and Roller Bearings
In 2024, approx. 490K tons of ball and roller bearings were consumed in the European Union; growing by 6.6% against 2023. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The volume of consumption peaked at 650K tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2024, consumption failed to regain momentum.
The value of the bearing market in the European Union rose notably to $6.8B in 2024, growing by 11% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers’ margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight decline. The level of consumption peaked at $9.1B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2024, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Consumption By Country
The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2024 were Germany (107K tons), Italy (104K tons) and Spain (61K tons), together accounting for 56% of total consumption.
From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +5.2%), while consumption for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($1.9B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($876M). It was followed by Spain.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Italy amounted to +2.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-5.8% per year) and Spain (+4.8% per year).
The countries with the highest levels of bearing per capita consumption in 2024 were Denmark (2.7 kg per person), Belgium (2.2 kg per person) and Hungary (2.1 kg per person).

ProductionEuropean Union’s Production of Ball and Roller Bearings
In 2024, bearing production in the European Union stood at 416K tons, flattening at the previous year. Overall, production, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 9.1% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak volume of 636K tons. From 2015 to 2024, production growth failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, bearing production rose notably to $8.2B in 2024 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the production volume increased by 11%. The level of production peaked at $11.3B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2024, production failed to regain momentum.
Production By Country
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2024 were Italy (89K tons), Germany (71K tons) and Romania (50K tons), together comprising 50% of total production. Spain, Austria, Slovakia, France and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.
From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +4.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.
ImportsEuropean Union’s Imports of Ball and Roller Bearings
In 2024, supplies from abroad of ball and roller bearings decreased by -21.3% to 545K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 781K tons in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, bearing imports reduced sharply to $8.3B in 2024. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $10.6B in 2023, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
Imports By Country
Germany represented the largest importing country with an import of about 164K tons, which finished at 30% of total imports. Italy (61K tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by France (9%), the Netherlands (8.2%), Belgium (8%) and Spain (6.1%). The following importers – Poland (22K tons), the Czech Republic (20K tons), Denmark (18K tons) and Sweden (18K tons) – together made up 14% of total imports.
From 2013 to 2024, average annual rates of growth with regard to bearing imports into Germany stood at -2.8%. At the same time, Belgium (+11.6%) and Spain (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +11.6% from 2013-2024. Poland, the Netherlands, Denmark and Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-1.5%), Sweden (-2.5%) and France (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belgium (+6 p.p.) and Spain (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Germany saw its share reduced by -4.5% from 2013 to 2024, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

From 2013 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany stood at -2.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-1.0% per year) and Italy (-1.7% per year).
Import Prices By Country
In 2024, the import price in the European Union amounted to $15,166 per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2023 when the import price increased by 15%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $15,335 per ton, and then fell modestly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($20,052 per ton), while Denmark ($10,911 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

ExportsEuropean Union’s Exports of Ball and Roller Bearings
In 2024, overseas shipments of ball and roller bearings decreased by -26.9% to 472K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports saw a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 685K tons in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, bearing exports dropped rapidly to $10.1B in 2024. In general, exports showed a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $12.8B in 2023, and then declined significantly in the following year.
Exports By Country
Germany was the major exporter of ball and roller bearings in the European Union, with the volume of exports amounting to 128K tons, which was approx. 27% of total exports in 2024. France (46K tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 9.7% share, followed by Italy (9.7%), the Netherlands (8.6%), Romania (8.1%), Poland (6.2%), Slovakia (5.3%) and Austria (5.1%). The following exporters – Spain (20K tons) and Belgium (19K tons) – each finished at an 8.1% share of total exports.
From 2013 to 2024, average annual rates of growth with regard to bearing exports from Germany stood at -2.7%. At the same time, Belgium (+10.4%) and the Netherlands (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +10.4% from 2013-2024. Romania and Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Spain (-1.3%), Italy (-3.9%), Slovakia (-4.8%), France (-5.7%) and Austria (-6.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+3.4 p.p.), Belgium (+2.9 p.p.) and Romania (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Austria and France saw its share reduced by -2.7% and -4.1% from 2013 to 2024, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($3.7B) remains the largest bearing supplier in the European Union, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($1.3B), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 9.3% share.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany totaled -1.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (-2.8% per year) and Italy (-2.1% per year).
Export Prices By Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $21,413 per ton in 2024, picking up by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the last eleven-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2023 when the export price increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2024 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2024, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($28,986 per ton), while Spain ($10,270 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
