Three men ‘holding hammers’ demanded cigarettes from a delivery driver inside a Tesco Express. Merseyside Police are appealing for information after the attempted robbery this morning, April 21 at the Tesco Express store on Smithdown Road.

The force said officers were called to the shop, at the junction with Greenbank Road, shortly after 7.30am where it was reported the men, who also had a small knife, demanded the cigarettes from the driver.

Merseyside Police said no assault was reported but the suspects made verbal threats to the man and other staff before fleeing from the scene empty handed. The offenders were described as wearing all black clothes and balaclavas.

Detective Inspector Ruth Tickle said: “While we can be thankful no one was physically hurt during this attempted robbery, it would have been a frightening experience for the staff involved.”The people who work in businesses large and small in Merseyside are often people who live locally just trying to earn a living. They should be able to do so without fear of being confronted by offenders intent on stealing, and we are determined to find those responsible for this incident and put them before the courts.”While early in the morning on a Bank Holiday, Smithdown Road is a busy road and we are keen to hear from anyone who may have been passing on foot or in a vehicle, possibly with dashcam, at around 7.30am. Any information or footage you have could be absolutely vital to our investigation.”
