  • Meghan Markle spoke about honoring family time by cooking homemade meals on With Love, Meghan’s second season

For Meghan Markle, the perfect start to the day is cooking breakfast for Prince Harry and their kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The conversation arose as the Duchess of Sussex prepared French toast alongside Queer Eye star Tan France in the latest season of her series With Love, Meghan, which premiered on Netflix on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

“I make hot breakfast most mornings for the kids and my husband. But it’s not as complicated as people think it is. This is so easy to make,” Meghan, 44, said. “It feels like a big undertaking, but you’re just slicing bread and dunking it in eggs and calling it a day.”

“You’re at the griddle. They’re not just eating cereal,” France responded.

“Yes, fried eggs and pancakes,” Meghan said, noting some of the special details her children, 6-year-old Archie and 4-year-old Lili, look forward to. “But I like to do surprise pancakes for the kids, so I always put some ground flax seeds, pour some chia seeds. And Lili will ask me, ‘Can I have chia seeds? I want it to have freckles.’ ”

She explained that the daily routine allows them to be intentional about the moments they spend together.

“The ritual of breakfast, it’s a sacred time as a family. You pace it. You can talk about what they’re excited for the day. So just take a minute of calm before the day, wherever the day is going to end up taking you,” the Duchess of Sussex said.

Still, the As ever creator likes to add her own signature flair.

“One thing I do with my kids — and I will say that it takes a bit more time — I like the presentation for them. Archie will say, ‘Oh, mama, that looks beautiful,’ ” Meghan said.

In March, she took to Instagram Stories to show off a special green waffle creation for the kids’ breakfast in honor of St. Patrick’s Day and was equally on theme with strawberries and red swirled bagels frosted with a pink spread for Valentine’s Day.

“I’m up before my kids are, so I’m normally up at 6:30, and then I get them up and dressed for the day, and we go downstairs,” she told PEOPLE earlier this year. “I love making breakfast for my family.”

But her everyday meals don’t always have to match the highlights she shares on social media for special occasions.

“My husband and Archie both love fried eggs,” she says. “There’s a lot of bacon around here. And then sometimes you don’t have time for all that, and you just put a frozen waffle in the toaster and call it a day. And there’s no shame in that either.”
