Manchester United have agreed a deadline day transfer for Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens as their interest cools over Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez – and our readers in The Manchester Evening News comments’ section want him to hit the ground running and be the club’s new first-choice goalkeeper before long.

United will pay an £18.2m fee to Belgium’s Royal Antwerp for Lammens – and he will sign a five-year contract. At 23, Lammens is considered to be an exciting goalkeeper with a bright future ahead of him, and he will be aiming to live up to his label of being the ‘next Thibaut Courtois’.

United had made enquiries to Aston Villa about a £40m deal for Emi Martinez, who was widely expected to leave the Midlands this summer, but they are confident that Lammens is the perfect choice for them. Goalkeeping has been an area of concern for fans, with mistakes by both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir contributing to their shaky start to the season.

Some fans want to see what Lammens is all about as soon as possible. Reader IlSacristano says: “Glad Lammens is signing. My sympathies for Andre Onana, but it was inevitable after the errors that have lost matches. Good luck to the new lad.”

Commenter RociLal thinks he was the best option: “The better choice. Thankfully Man Utd dodged a bullet with Martinez. Best to get rid of Onana now and give young Lammens a run of games.”

Realperson disagrees: “I hope we’re still buying Martinez and selling or loaning out Onana, Bayindir or both.”

Boysof66 writes: “Put him in from the start and give him an extended run, as he’s got to be better than the other two. But I’d get rid of Onana first if possible and bring that young keeper [Radek Vitek] back from Bristol City, and apparently he’s doing really well there, for next season.”

Glazerclowns says: “Bit of a risk. Hope it pays off. Can’t be worse than Onana and Bayindir.”

Some fans worry that Lammens is not what United need to make immediate improvements. Chickenoriental writes: “Does anyone know much about this guy? I really don’t trust United scouts!

“I hope he’s a talent but, if he’s another dud, this could get embarrassing.”

Buryred20 says: “I really hope that they’ve done proper due diligence on him. Has he got an iron temperament? Is he comfortable with his feet? And does he command his six-yard box on set-pieces?

“Gutted that two of best ‘keepers in the world were available and we didn’t go for either of them.”

1954brad writes: “I admit I don’t know much about this ‘keeper and I’ve only seen clips on YouTube. He looks like a decent shot-stopper, but there’s nothing showing crosses and corners – which in the Premier League he will have a lot to deal with. But with a new ‘keeper in, and Sancho and Antony out, it could be a good day.”

RED DEVIL says: “Is Lammens the right choice with no Prem experience? Great for the future, but Martinez would have been better at the back, because the current goalkeepers are making our defence nervous.”
