Münster (Germany) – More than 2 million battery storage systems have now been installed in Germany. But the real boom in the storage market is yet to come – fueled by significantly declining battery prices. One federal state in particular could benefit from this growth.
Battery Storage Expansion: Development from January to July 2025
By the end of July 2025, more than 2 million battery storage systems with a total installed power of around 14,000 MW and an energy capacity of nearly 22,500 MWh (22.5 GWh) had been installed in Germany. These figures are based on an analysis of data from the Federal Network Agency’s Market Master Data Register (Marktstammdatenregister) by the IWR in Münster.
In the first seven months alone, more than 318,000 new battery storage systems were installed, with an installed power of approximately 2,088 MW and an energy capacity of 3,868 MWh. “The large number of current planning projects involving utility-scale systems indicates that the real market ramp-up is imminent,” said Dr. Norbert Allnoch, head of IWR. Falling prices and rising demand from industry and commercial sectors are further accelerating this trend.
North Rhine-Westphalia currently leads the statistics for new battery installations from January to July 2025, with around 10,900 new units, followed by Bavaria (approx. 9,950) and Baden-Württemberg (approx. 8,600).
For the full year 2025, IWR expects around 550,000 new battery storage systems to be installed across Germany. This would bring the total number to approximately 2.3 million, with a combined power of 16,000 MW and an energy capacity of over 25,000 MWh. In international comparison, Germany is well on track: the California Energy Commission reports an installed power of 15,763 MW in the U.S. state as of April 3, 2025.
NRW’s Strong Potential: From Power Plant Hub to Battery Storage Leader
Allnoch sees North Rhine-Westphalia as a key beneficiary of the upcoming market surge: “With its many former power plant sites, strong industrial base, and existing infrastructure, the state has the best conditions for developing from a power generation location into a storage hub for the entire country”, he said.
