Wales has seen its hottest summer on record according to the Met Office. With an average temperature, according to provisional statistics, of 16.06°C in Wales from June, July and August, the figures have beaten a record which stood for three decades.
Wales’ previous warmest summer was in 1995 when temperatures averaged 16.04°C. This year, the hottest day of the year came on July 12 when 33.1°C was recorded in Cardiff.
Last week also saw the hottest August bank holiday Monday temperature ever recorded. That came in Hawarden in Flintshire, where temperatures reached 29.6°C. For the biggest stories in Wales first, sign up to our daily newsletter
While the figures have not reached the all-time high which was also set in Hawarden in July, 2022, it has been the warmest summer as a whole with temperatures passing the heatwave threshold, which is three consecutive days above 25°C, on four separate occasions in the country.
This summer has not only been Wales’ warmest but also its driest and sunniest since 2022. That followed the country’s driest spring in over 50 years. According to the Met Office, Wales had 79% of its average summer rainfall this summer.
It has led to some upsetting scenes of drought with stories accompanying those scenes including dried up canals and water-based events threatened.
The coming days are expected to bring some much-needed relief for farmers. After some unsettled weather across the country recently there are plenty of heavy showers forecast for the upcoming week as well as a marked drop in temperatures.
A spokesperson for the weather agency said: “Wednesday does indeed look like an unsettled day for Wales with an area of low pressure bringing wet and windy conditions, especially through the morning.
“There are no warnings issued currently but this may change so please do keep an eye on the forecast and our news releases as we get closer to the event.” You can read more on the weather in the coming days here.
