Police were called out last Monday, August 25, regarding an incident during an alleged robbery on the town’s James Street.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed that the alleged assault took place two days earlier.
In a statement yesterday evening, they said: “The injured man remains within the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where medical staff describe his condition as serious.
“A 44-year-old man has been arrested and charged following the incident.”
The man was due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday.
