UK: Applicant Thistle Property has submitted a proposal to transform office space at 43-45 George Street in Edinburgh into an aparthotel.

Thistle Property aims to create 15 apartments spread across the four floors of the building. Rooms will include seven studios, six one-beds and two two-beds.

The basement of 43 George Street would also be used as a plant room and for back-of-house purposes.

ISA Architecture and Design said in the application: “The proposed change of use to an aparthotel presents an opportunity to modernise the interior and reintroduce a residential function to the building. It is acknowledged that physical works will be required to facilitate this change of use and that listed building consent will be required for those works.”

Work includes a “marginal increase in scale” to roof lights, removing the existing external escape stairs to the rear of the property, and replacing door openings and windows.

The planning application added: “The aparthotel will contribute to the variety of tourist and visitor accommodation within the city centre. It will not change the current level of amenity of any residential property near the site.”

Edinburgh City Council are due to make a decision on the application by Friday 24 October.
