John McEnroe has labelled Carlos Alcaraz as a cut above Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal at the age of 22.
The Spaniard has enjoyed an incredible career in tennis to date at such a young age, boasting five Grand Slam titles.
“I have to say that Carlos Alcaraz is my favourite player to watch,” McEnroe explained. “And that’s mainly because he’s willing to do anything and try anything.
“He’s not content to just play from the baseline. A lot of players have been playing like that for a long time, and it’s become a bit repetitive, with the same style of play, and then there were the big serves.
“So they tried to change that at Wimbledon, to slow down the court so that the serve wasn’t so important.
“Ironically, the courts here at the US Open are quite fast, and I think that makes them more interesting, because players have to be more comfortable coming to the net. [Jannik] Sinner has worked hard on that. Their rivalry is obviously incredible.”
