Salford Red Devils fans will protest the club’s ownership ahead of Thursday night’s Super League game against Catalans Dragons and it’s now been confirmed that former club captain Ryan Brierley will be in attendance as well.

Brierley is one of nearly 20 senior players to have left Salford this season, either on a permanent or loan basis, with the full-back exiting in early August to join Championship side Oldham.

An emotional statement was released by Brierley, who is himself a boyhood Salford fan, with the 33-year-old speaking further on Sky Sports to confirm he had hit ‘breaking point’.

Within his statement was a line which showed the measure of the man and his love for the Red Devils, as Brierley said of his exit: “I find peace in the fact that the club will benefit, even if it is just for the short term.”

Brierley’s exit surely will have relieved the club somewhat financially but those financial issues remain, hence the fans continued protestations, which Brierley has now been confirmed to be taking part in.

Ryan Brierley to stand side by side with Salford Red Devils’ fans

Having previously announced their plans and teasing that a ‘special guest’ would be joining, it’s now officially been announced by fan group The 1873 that former skipper Brierley is said special guest.

A new post from the group on social media announced: “We are excited to confirm former club captain & boyhood Salford fan Ryan Brierley will be joining us on Thursdays march, to say thank you to the supporters who’ve stood by and backed him.

“He’s one of our own. Let’s make it a night to remember. See you all there! The 1873”

Whilst a number of games have had unreported attendances, the largest at a Salford home game so far this year came in Round Two when the club hosted Leeds Rhinos having just had their salary cap lifted.

That game drew 5,798 fans but the most recently reported attendance was only 2,051, ironically in a game that they won as they defeated Castleford in July.

With the fan protest expected to draw large numbers and fans eager to support their side and make their voices heard, a crowd far larger than that is expected.

The Red Devils had earlier confirmed their 21-man squad with nine loan players named once again as well as recent recruits Jack Walker and Isaac Shaw, with Salford also welcoming back Esan Marsters.
