The subway that runs underneath Redcliff Hill is set to permanently close today (September 1) for Bristol City Council to create separate cycle lanes and plant new trees ahead of the Bedminster Bridges project.
The council will also widen and upgrade a nearby pedestrian crossing between Redcliffe Sixth Form Centre and the Mercure Bristol Holland House Hotel.
Signs were placed outside each entrance to the subway announcing it would be closed at the end of August, one of which had been tagged with graffiti. A few shopping trolleys were abandoned inside the underpass, which was still accessible on the morning of September 1.

The subway closure comes ahead of the start of the Bedminster Bridges project, a multi million pound scheme which will radically transform the major crossing over the River Avon.
The main change will be the removal of the roundabout and the creation of two separate two-way bridges, the western bridge for buses only and the eastern one for other traffic. Cyclists and scooters will also be moved off the road onto separate cycle lanes.
York Road on the south side of the river recently reopened to traffic one way, from Bath Road towards Bedminster, having been closed since July 2024. The road is not expected to fully reopen until Spring 2026.
The Bath New Bridge has also been closed apart from one lane for repair works since July, with that closure also expected to last until Spring next year.

Langton Street Bridge, otherwise known as the Banana Bridge which is located between Bath New Bridge and the Bedminster Bridge roundabout, reopened in June after restoration works, five months ahead of schedule. The exact start date of the Bedminster Bridges project is yet to be confirmed.
