A suspect has been named after a house went up in flames. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) was called to Fernbank Drive in Netherton shortly before 1.30pm on Thursday, August 28 following reports of a fire.
The fire was extinguished but caused “significant damage” to the property. Nobody was injured in the fire, but one person suffered from slight smoke inhalation, a spokesperson for MFRS said. The fire service notified Merseyside Police about the incident at around 2.25pm.
In an update, Merseyside Police confirmed John Steers, 31, of Fernbank Drive, Netherton, was charged with arson with intent to endanger life. He was remanded into custody to appear in court on August 30. Following the incident, a cordon was in place and a chair could be seen in the drive.
The upper windows of the house were also open. A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said at the time: “Fire crews were called to a fire on Fernbank Drive, Netherton, yesterday afternoon.
“Crews were alerted at 1.27pm and on scene at 1.36pm, with four fire engines in attendance. Crews arrived to find a detached building with the first floor well alight and smoke coming from an upstairs window.

“Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building and extinguished the fire with hose reel jets.
“All persons were accounted for with one person suffering from slight smoke inhalation.
“Firefighters continued to damp down the area affected by fire and checked for fire spread in the roof space before leaving the scene in the hands of Merseyside Police at 4.05pm.”
