A Russian military plane with a top secret cargo crash landed minutes after take off today.

The hulking Il-76 transport aircraft careered off the runway in remote Krasnoyarsk region.

It came to rest up an incline some 200ft from the runway.

The plane had requested an emergency landing minutes after taking off from Krasnoyarsk Airport in Siberia due to “engine trouble”.

It was given permission to land at nearby Cheremshanka Airport, which is mainly used for domestic aircraft.

The authorities have not disclosed what or who the plane was carrying but said there were no casualties.

The Il-76 is widely used for military transport in the war against Ukraine.

This plane was en route to Ulan-Ude in Buryatia region when it was hit by the emergency.

Emergency services are currently at the scene.

Krasnoyarsk Krai (region) is a federal subject of Russia located in Siberia. Its administrative centre is the city of Krasnoyarsk, the second-largest city in Siberia after Novosibirsk, with population of around 1.1 million.

The Il-76 is a 1970s multi-purpose four-engine airlifter designed by Soviet Uniton’s aircraft manufacturer Ilyushin.

Russian military plane crashes aren’t uncommon. In June, the Soviet-designed SU-25 fighter jet reportedly crashed over Donetsk Oblast. Videos show the plane crashing into a field after being followed by another fighter jet. Soon after, a Sukhoi Su-34 fighter-bomber crashed during a training flight in the Nizhny Novgorod region, citing mechanical failure.
