Emiliano Martinez was beaming with joy and also appeared “delighted” as he shared his first Instagram post since transfer deadline day concluded. The Aston Villa goalkeeper had been strongly linked with a last-minute switch to Manchester United before the window slammed shut.
Unai Emery had acknowledged the World Cup winner’s situation remained unclear after excluding him from Villa’s squad for their loss against Crystal Palace on Sunday – merely 24 hours before the deadline.
When questioned about Martinez during his post-match press conference, Emery said: “It’s one thing we have to fix. Tomorrow the window is finishing and we are expecting something to improve our squad. Keep calm.
“One of the circumstances is Emi Martinez, we will see tomorrow and then we try get the balance and work after the break.”
Martinez eventually stayed at Villa Park as United snapped-up Belgian shot-stopper Sennes Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day. The Belgian has signed in a £18.2million plus add-ons deal.
Martinez has now joined up with Argentina during the current international break. After reuniting with his national team colleagues, Martinez shared images of himself grinning during training sessions – accompanied by the Spanish word “Feliz” – which, as translated into English, means happy.
Despite his desire to leave and make the transfer to United during the summer, Villa are reported to be ready to continue with the Argentina international and that he is not keen on a move to Turkey.
With Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir both failing to establish themselves as United’s No.1, Lammens arrives as an immediate contender for the role. However, given Amorim’s recent comments, he may be gradually eased in.
“Guys, they are humans,” Amorim said. “Manchester United, everything is huge – and everybody talks about the goalkeeper. And you can see, I can change the goalkeeper in the situations that happen. We are in that moment.
“I think it is hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment.
“But if you look at the first goal, we can defend it better. We suffered a quite similar goal against Fulham, because we don’t do the full rotation of the team when the ball is on the other side.
“All these small things have nothing to do with the goalkeeper. So, the players are struggling a little bit with all the things around the club. That is normal. So it’s not just the goalkeepers. I think everybody has to improve.”
