The PEEL spotlight report – ‘How effectively do the police record crime?’ – brings together findings from the 2016-2020 Crime Data Integrity and 2021-22 and 2023-25 PEEL inspection programmes and cites the force as a case study for how other police forces can improve and sustain crime recording standards.
The report states: “West Yorkshire Police’s officers and staff understand the importance of correctly recording crime.
“The force has shown that improvements in crime recording can be sustained and embedded.
“Strong leadership, good governance and effective training for frontline officers and staff have led to outstanding crime-recording standards.”
Superintendent Daniel Wood, of the force’s Corporate Services department, said: “We are delighted to have been recognised by the Inspectorate in this way.
“The force has put a lot of time and effort into improving and maintaining these standards.
“Accurate crime recording is key to giving our victims the service they expect when reporting matters to us. It also helps our communities to have trust and confidence in the policing services that we deliver to help make West Yorkshire a safer place.”
