More film crews have been spotted in Merseyside as production continues on a new DC movie in the area. Famous streets and landmarks in Liverpool have been transformed in recent weeks for the filming of Clayface.

In the DC world of characters, Clayface is a shapeshifting villain who is a recurring foe of Batman. The project is not believed to be part of the existing The Batman cinematic universe starring Robert Pattinson, which was also filmed in Liverpool. Over the last few days, film crews have also been spotted by the Seacombe Ferry Terminal in Wirral.

Part of the promenade, which runs past the ventilation shaft for the Wallasey Tunnel, has been blocked off as preparations take place. In a video posted yesterday, TikToker @badboybeaman spoke to a crew member who when asked if it was Clayface replied “yes”. The TikToker also claimed he was told that crews would be in Seacombe until September 14.

Film crews have also been spotted at the disused Birkenhead tunnel entrance on Rendel Street in recent days.

Earlier this week in Liverpool, the Cunard Building and Water Street were used for filming. Overflowing bins stencilled with fake graffiti lined the street outside Gaucho.

Rain towers could be seen cascading rain onto the set as actors huddled under umbrellas. A number of vehicles were parked at the scene, including a yellow New York-style Gotham taxi cab.

An actor with his face heavily bandaged, understood to be Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries, could be see talking with the production crew. According to Deadline, Harries has been cast in the title role of Clayface, a tragic and terrifying villain from the Batman comic book.

Over the weekend, the exterior of Liverpool Crown Court and the surrounding Derby Square in the city centre were turned into a gritty film set for the horror-thriller. Derby Square was littered with rubbish, fake graffiti had been stencilled onto walls and dozens of tents had been put up.

On Monday, September 1, the spotlight shifted to another Liverpool landmark – the World Museum – which was reimagined as Gotham City Courthouse. A newly installed sign marked the transformation, while actors and production crew descended on the area.

Photos captured a buzz of activity outside the makeshift courthouse. Journalists and photographers appeared to gather for a dramatic scene, with several Gotham Police motorbikes and GBC news vans parked nearby.

A hooded figure was seen interacting with reporters before entering the building, accompanied by an actress in a trench coat.

The film is directed by Speak No Evil filmmaker James Watkins and is expected to lean into horror-thriller territory.

On why he chose to film so much of The Batman in Liverpool, director Matt Reeves said in 2020: “(Gotham) is just as important as any of the Rogues Gallery, it’s sort of like the nature of this place is and the history of it is critically important to our story.

“One of the things I really wanted to do because it is the centre of this story, especially the history of corruption in the city, was I wanted to present it in a way that was really fleshed out.

“I wanted it to feel like an American city you’d never been to.”
