Planners have limited powers to prevent digital polesThe site in Addison Crescent where a 60ft mast could be erected
Plans have been submitted to erect a 60ft-high telecoms mast and base station on a grass verge in Old Trafford.
Digital company Cornerstone has tabled the proposal for the land at Addison Crescent, close to its junction with Kings Road.
The application has appeared on Trafford council’s planning portal and is a notification under general permitted development regulations which cover such mast if they are below 97ft in height.

Cornerstone’s mast will support six antennas and a dish together with two ground-based equipment cabinets.
The company describes itself as ‘the UK’s leading mobile infrastructure services company’. It manages and owns 20,000 such sites across the country.
Although such developments are ‘permitted development’, plans may still require prior approval from local planning authorities. This gives planners the opportunity to assess whether the proposed development meets the conditions set out in the rules.
For mobile masts under 97ft – or 30 metres – the main condition is that the siting and appearance must minimise their visual impact on the surrounding area.

Documents submitted by Cornerstone say: “This is identified as the most suitable option that balances operational need with local planning policies and national planning policy guidance. “It will deliver public benefit in terms of the mobile services it will provide.
“Furthermore, we would like to assist the local planning authority and would like to offer to arrange a presentation or meeting with your officers and members to discuss the issues if appropriate.”
