The entertainment industry was left reeling when Freddie Mercury’s alleged secret daughter revealed that he he was her father – and now journalist Lesley-Ann Jones is looking into the claims in 5’s new documentary.
Freddie Mercury: Secret Daughter looks at the evidence that anonymous ‘B’, who was just 15 years old when Freddie died, could in fact be his daughter. Having exchanged emails with B, Lesley-Ann goes to visit her in Montreux, Switzerland – where Freddie often visited to record his songs.
B has revealed how Freddie gave her 17 volumes of his personal journals, which form the basis of her book Love, Freddie, and that she was the product of a one-off fling between Freddie and her mother.
However the documentary, which airs on Saturday on Channel 5, goes into more details about the secrets Freddie shared with his alleged daughter. Here is a look at some of the bombshells to come from the film.
B has ‘utterly unmistakable resemblance’ to Freddie in photosB has an “unmistakable resemblance” to Freddie Mercury, according to Lesley-Ann Jones(Image: Getty Images)
In the documentary, Lesley-Ann reveals that she has met B in-person – and even seen pictures of her with Freddie. “I was struck by her utterly unmistakable resemblance to Freddie,” she says.
“She has his eyes, his jaw, his cheeks and his nose. His hands and skin tone and hair texture. There’s also a particular set of pictures which were taken by Mick Rock, the man who shot the 70s, he was a close friend of Freddie’s. He knew about B, he did a private photo session with them together and he gave Freddie the negatives. I’ve seen pictures.”
While Leslie-Ann has tried to convince B to publish the photographs, she refused. “They are records of my dad and the grandfather of my children who cherish them and we want them to remain private,” B says.
Freddie’s friends ‘can’t accept’ daughter as they share doubts
Freddie Mercury’s friends contribute to the documentary, sharing their scepticism over B’s claims. Record producer Mike Morann notes that he doesn’t think Freddie would have kept his child a secret, adding: “You’d think he would have dropped a hint.”
While journalist David Wigg adds: “That’s what I find so strange – I think if he had a child, he would be proud of having a child. He would tell his friends. I find it odd that 30 years later this person wants to come out but not even say who she is.”
B’s emails to Lesley-Ann suggest that Freddie’s ex Mary Austen knew about her and all his “undisclosed secrets”, however Mary went on to tell The Times that she is “not the guardian of such a secret” and would that it would be “astonishing” if Freddie had a child without her knowing.
Having spoken to Mary, David tells the documentary that she has no comment to make and “doesn’t want to be involved”.
As for the diaries that Freddie allegedly wrote for B, his friends claim that they never saw him “put pen to paper”. Mike says: “I never saw a diary. I never saw Freddie write in a diary, he never mentioned a diary to anybody. How weird is that?”
However, B said he kept it secret from them. “He never wanted anyone but me to see them, he wrote them privately keeping them hidden away at the flat in Finnemore Gardens,” she said. “He wrote so that I would never doubt him or forget who he really was.”
David adds that he “can’t accept” B’s claims until he sees proof, while Mike says that if her claims are falsified, “it is a disgraceful thing to do to an extraordinary human being like Freddie”.
Lesley-Ann Jones and David WiggFreddie’s dark childhood at private school
B opens up about Freddie’s childhood in the documentary, claiming that Freddie revealed in his diaries that he was bullied by students at St. Peter’s boarding school in Bombay, India.
She claims that one of the school masters sexually abused Freddie for months. “She leaves us in no doubt what was happening to Freddie and how horrified and devastated and lost he felt,” Lesley-Ann says.
While B claims that he sabotaged his academic results in order to leave the school. “It was an enormous thing to do because he was a high-flyer but his misery drove him to fail so that he could leave,” Lesley-Ann adds.
Speaking to the documentary, college friend Peter Humberstone said that Freddie never spoke about his childhood. “He was very private, he never said anything about India,” he says.
Freddie’s secret tapes
While some have questioned why B wasn’t included in Freddie’s will if she is indeed his child, Lesley-Ann reveals in the documentary that he provided for her in another way.
“He was maintaining her privacy,” she says. “Freddie was buying and selling gold bullion and valuable paintings and created wealth for her over the period of the 15 years of her life so that she would be left supremely well-provided for.”
She adds that B also owns a lot of “unreleased recordings” from Freddie that will “never be released”. She says: “They will never see the light of day.”
Why B can’t reveal her identity
In Saturday’s programme, B reveals that she can’t share her identity for legal reasons – as she’s unsure whether she legally owns the notebooks allegedly left to her by Freddie.
She explains that as the Queen star left everything to Mary Austen in his will, Queen’s entire back catalogue and creative output is now owned by Sony Music – which could include Freddie’s writings and songs. B worries that if she comes clean about her identity, she may lose the notebooks.
Freddie Mercury: A Secret Daughter? airs Saturday at 9:10pm on 5.
