Ronan Keating rushed to the aid of his fellow hitmaker Rick Astley when he was struck by a coughing fit during an appearance on The One Show.

The musical duo appeared on Friday night’s (September 5) instalment of the BBC programme to discuss their respective long-running careers in music.

Earlier in the episode, Rick could heard coughing while his fellow sofa guest Ronan addressed rumours of an upcoming Boyzone reunion, and things only got worse as the show progressed.

After Keating said he found himself taking himself and his work too seriously in the early years, presenters Lauren Laverne and JB Gill then turned to Rick to ask him if he could relate.

“Can you connect with that Rick?” Lauren asked, as he croaked back: “I can yeah” before reaching for his water.

“I’m just having a coughing fit actually,” he shared as he sat bent over on the sofa clutching his drink, prompting Ronan to rush over to him and pat him on the back whilst clutching his forearm in a gesture of support.

“I’m fine,” he insisted, claiming he was just “getting emotional” over the Boyzone star’s story, prompting laughter from the hosts. However, as he continued to try and answer their question, he was still struck by a gravelly voice.

“I literally have just lost my voice,” he said, as Ronan acted quickly and handed him more water. Attempting to finish his answer without coughing, he continued: “As you were saying having a song that means so much to you -” before his cough struck again.

“I don’t know what’s happened to my voice,” he said sounding panicked, before just about managing to round off his answer.

“Alright we’ll just let you get your voice back,” co-host JB interjected, as Lauren joked: “You have a drink and a kick back.”
