Joy Crookes drops her new album, Juniper, two weeks from today, and she will be celebrating by performing a special one-off show at the Tate Modern a week after its release. She will play the South Tanks in the Blavatnik Building at the London gallery on September 26.
The singer-songwriter will perform songs from Juniper and will fill the area around the stage with photographs and outfits that have inspired her along the way to creating this record.

Themes of ‘migration, memory, and place’ on Juniper are also partly inspired by Joy Crookes’ connection to artist Do Ho Suh, who has had an exhibition running at the Tate this summer. The Genesis Exhibition by Do Ho Suh runs until October 26, so you could even catch it on the same day as Crookes’ performance ahead of seeing the Lates show.
Speaking on the news, Joy Crookes said: “I feel honoured to be performing at the Tate Modern Late this September. Tate has always been a vital place for me growing up in London – it has the ability to draw out so many emotions in me, and in all Londoners. My songwriting wouldn’t be what it is, if I didn’t explore the theme of place.

“As a huge fan of Do Ho Suh, to be taking part in this Late in the context of his exhibition is a massive privilege. The themes of home and identity cross over so much in our creative work and I’m excited to share these with audiences for the first time.”
Do Ho Suh himself will also be appearing as part of the Tate Modern Lates lineup on the same day, giving a talk on his reflections of his work with Nabila Abdel Nabi, Senior Curator of International Art at the gallery. This will then be followed by a screening of short films by collaborators who worked with Do Ho Suh on his Bridge Project, which includes filmmaker Hugh Brody, and activist Doreen Nutaaq Simmonds.

Tickets to the show go on sale just after Juniper‘s release on Monday, September 22 at 11am. If you’re aged 16-25, you can also sign up to Tate Collective to enter the ballot for a set of free tickets. Find more information on tickets and the ballot here.
Of course, you can also head to the drop in sessions at Tate Modern lates, which this month include DJ sets at Level 1 Bridge all evening from East and South East Asian diaspora artists; a workshop with Tate Drew at the Starr Foyer; DJ sets by Global Roots and a game of Korean Gonggi at Corner Bar; and a ‘Collaging Home And Memory’ workshop in Level 2 of the Blavatnik Building.
