Autumn has no shortage of traditions: digging out cosy jumpers from your wardrobe, drinking pumpkin-spiced lattes, snuggling up on the sofa to watch Great British Bake Off, to name but a few.

Going for a walk and taking in the beautiful colours of changing leaves on the trees is another one. There’s something special about feeling the crunch of leaves underfoot and noticing how the light changes at this time of the year.

On the outskirts of Oldham is Tandle Hill Country Park and it’s one of the best places for an autumn walk.

Covering an area of around 48 hectares, it features a mixture of woodland grassland, with towering trees which begin to transform from vivid green to burning read as the season progresses.

The park has received dozens of five star reviews online, with many praising how beautiful it is all year round – but it’s autumn when it impresses people the most.

One visitor Natalie wrote on Tripadvisor: “Lovely here in Autumn when all the trees’ leaves are turning” while another said: “It is spectacular in autumn because of the colour of the leaves. You can spend as little or as much time as you like but you will want to return in all seasons.”

Tandle Hill Country Park actually holds claim to being Oldham’s oldest and feels a world away from the surrounding urban sprawl.

The woodland is criss-crossed with dozens of trails and you could spend hours exploring it all. Keep your eyes peeled and you’ll notice all the wildlife which call this place home, from curious squirrels to a huge variety of birds.

But the park does hold a secret: it has a viewpoint which offers breathtaking views across Manchester, Oldham and Rochdale.

On a clear day you can see distant towers of Manchester’s skyline glittering in the sunlight, with the city giving way to green countryside.

There are benches nearby which provide the perfect spot to soak up the views from. You could even bring a picnic along and make a day of it.

Tandle Hill Country park does have a cafe, although it’s only open from 9.30am to 4.30pm at weekends.

If you fancy a pub visit after your walk, Tandle Hill Tavern is less than a 10-minute drive away, open from midday until 8pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11pm, on Fridays and Saturdays, and 9pm on Sundays.

There is a free car park (OL2 5UY) although it’s important to note the public toilets at Tandle Hill Country Park are currently closed.
