An ‘outstanding’ BBC legal drama which has left viewers ‘blown away’ is set to land on Netflix next week. The crime anthology series, Accused, starring Anne-Marie Duff and Anna Maxwell Martin, sees each episode telling a different story about someone who is accused of a serious crime with viewers not finding out if the person is guilty or innocent until the end.
The show, which first aired for two seasons in 2010 and 2012, is now being added to the streaming platform a decade and a half on from its initial release, which is likely to come as a pleasant surprise to fans who previously watched the show. The synopsis reads: “Accused is a crime anthology series where viewers are taken on the journey of the defendant.
“Each episode opens in a courtroom on the accused, with viewers knowing nothing about their crime or how they ended up on trial. Told from the defendant’s point of view through flashbacks, the show holds a mirror up to the current times with evocative and emotional stories.

“Viewers discover how an ordinary person gets caught up in an extraordinary situation, ultimately revealing how one wrong turn leads to another, until it’s too late to turn back.”
Written and created by Jimmy McGovern, the series boasts a star studded cast, with Duff and Martin being joined by the likes of Christopher Eccleston, Peter Capaldi, Andy Serkis, Naomie Harris, Stephen Graham, Sean Bean, Olivia Colman and Sheridan Smith.

Although Accused first aired 15 years ago, the legal drama has found a new streaming home in the UK with all episodes of the show set to be released on Netflix on September 10.
The programme has received high praise from viewers on IMDB who scored it a 7.9 out of 10 with over 3,200 reviews.
One fan praised Jimmy McGovern’s work as they branded him as a ‘stellar writer’.
The reviewer wrote: “Each of these individual one hour stories are captivating from start to finish. Jimmy McGovern excels in tight scripts which gripped me with their realism and pace. The series is further enhanced by fine English acting.”
A second penned: “The acting is excellent, the story-lines often gut wrenching reflecting on the real trials of being human, making bad mistakes and the like. It sounds like a downer, and it might be for some.
“I watched this for the first time on flix a couple of years ago, and basically binged through both seasons. Saw it again this year, and it’s still completely riveting.
A third exclaimed the show had ‘blown them away’. In a 10 star rating review, they wrote: “I can’t believe it took me so long to find this series!!! This is what happens when top writers and some of Britain’s most impressive actors emotional involve themselves into making great drama.
“What a theme! That on paper, through the courts, there is simply a charge and a decision, without the truth behind the who’s, what’s, when’s and why’s. One of the best dramas to date!”
Accused is coming to Netflix on September 10.
