Edinburgh locals were left in awe after noticing a strange phenomenon in the night sky on Friday, September 5.

Residents across the city shared images on social media of what appeared to be a Scottish flag, made by the reflection of the moon and two overlapping clouds.

The bright, almost full moon, lit up the two straight clouds in a cross formation perfectly giving patriots across the city a spectacular sight.

Images were shared across multiple social media pages, with those able to capture the strange event desperate to share their joy with others.

While not an official term, one surprised local dubbed it a ‘saltire moon’ and people flooded to the comments to share in their amazement.

One person wrote: “Wasn’t it beautiful. I saw it from my sitting room window.”

Another said: “Who put the flag up there ? Awesome.”

While a third added: “So glad someone got a good pic! I was on the bus and the glare from the lights and people made it near impossible to capture.”
