King Charles and Queen Camilla have held a moment of silence today in Scotland just two days after the death of Katharine, the Duchess of Kent. Their Majesties have stepped out today at the Braemar Royal Highland Gathering at The Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park, marking their first public appearance since the duchess’ sad death was announced on Friday.

The King, 76, and Queen, 78, looked emotional during the one-minute silence before taking to their seats for the games to begin. The games are traditionally held annually on the first Saturday of September in Braemar, and feature traditional events such as Highland dancing, pipe band competitions and band parades.

The King was spotted wearing a black suit jacket and tie, along with a white shirt and kilt. Meanwhile Queen Camilla sported a long blue coat with a tartan collar.

For almost 200 years, the Braemar Gathering has been a highlight of the sporting calendar in Scotland, set in the beautiful Cairngorms village of Braemar.

Thousands of tourists descend on the beautiful Scottish town each year due to its stunning scenery, interesting royal history and variety of outdoor activities.

The Gathering has been run in its present form since 1832. Queen Victoria attended in 1848, and since then it has been regularly attended by the reigning Monarch and members of the Royal Family.

Events at the games include the caber toss, a feat of strength where larch trees, sometimes over 20 feet long, are thrown end over end, tug o’ war, throwing of hammers, pipe bands and highland dancing.

The King tends to attend the games every year with Queen Camilla.

In 2023, Princess Anne even accompanied the monarch to the competition, where she was seen having a good time with her brother.

It is believed the royals are very fond of Scotland, spending each summer at Balmoral Castle.
