When it comes to ranking the best place to live, needing to have a mix of everything is a top priority to bag the top spot. And one place near Cardiff which passes that test with flying colours is Penarth. Known for its trendy-meets-traditional vibe, it has easy access to both sea and city and the countryside all at the same time.

Penarth was recently crowned the best place to live in the entire country by Garrington Property Finders, which acts as a buying agent for clients looking to purchase property.

“It claimed the number two spot in the value for money category”, Garrington Property Finders notes. “A typical family home there costs £502,497 after average prices softened by 5.1% in a year, making this prime location exceptional value.”

That means, contrary to popular perception, living in this gem of a place might actually be more affordable than you think.

It’s worth noting, however, that’s more than the average house price in Wales, which increased by 5.1% in the 12 months to May 2025, to £210,000 according to government statistics. Love dreamy Welsh homes? Sign up to our newsletter here

Garrington Property Finders also describe Penarth as “an elegant seaside town just three miles from the centre of Cardiff”, adding; “Famous for its Art Deco pavilion and pebble beach, the town looks out across the waters of the Severn Estuary and came 31st overall in our ranking.”

In terms of what might draw people to the area, the list is endless.

The seafront has changed over the years, with new businesses joining the popular stretch by the water and bringing different kinds of energy to the area.

Coffi Co has brought fresh life to the seaside town with its popular rooftop seating area.

Also joining the area recently was Silures, at Holm House which opened their second venue as a luxury hotel having originally opened in Cardiff, starting as a restaurant and bar in Roath.

But as well as cool coffee shops and bars, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the slower side of Penarth as there are a range of activities you can get involved with, from a leisurely spot of golf at the Glamorganshire Golf Club, or Wenvoe Castle Golf club.

You could also take a trip out to Pugh’s Garden Village which is an award winning garden centre conveniently located on Port Road, just off from Culverhouse Roundabout.

But one of its standout features has to be Windsor Arcade.

There’s something for every generation in this picture perfect corner of the area, as there are a number of Gen Z friendly hang outs here, including Refresh Juice and Wellness Bar, as well as more traditional feeling tea rooms, and even a sweet shop.

Penarth has also been consistently praised for its strong transport links, with it being recently named as one of the top commuter towns in the UK as it’s just a 10 minute journey away from the capital. You can read more about this story here.

On foot, or by bike, Penarth also has easy access to Cardiff Bay Barrage, where you could take a stroll straight down to Millennium Stadium, or enjoy one of the many restaurants in this tourist hotspot.

If you want to see the sort of thing your cash could get you in Penarth, at the time of writing, we found a number of appealing properties at around and under the £500,000 mark, including modern apartments to well-maintained semi detached homes.

This fully renovated flat on Victoria Square is on offer for £300,000 and boasts two double bedrooms, and could make the perfect choice for a couple looking to enjoy a slightly quieter life in pretty Penarth.

There’s also a trendy new apartment available in Windsor Gardens for £290,000 – ideal if you prefer more of a fresh, modern feel.

There was also this semi-detached period property on Penlan Road which is on the market for £300,00. Although it is described as requiring a little refurbishment, overall it looks as though it would make a dreamy family home in the sought after area with a little bit more love.

Alternatively, you could also go for this lovely looking Victorian terraced house on Queens Road that is being sold for £295,000.
