The BBC’s latest gritty thriller series has arrived and fans can not get enough of the countless twists and turns in the striking new drama. The Guest is one of the several binge worthy TV shows which is kicking off the impressive selection of dramas on the broadcaster this autumn and it seems like everyone is talking about it.

Filmed and set in Wales, the four-part thriller series focuses on the toxic relationship between business owner Fran and her cleaner, Ria. Welsh star Eve Myles plays powerful business owner Fran Sharp in the BBC thriller while Gabrielle Creevy stars as Fran’s cleaner Ria Powell.

The Guest aired earlier this week on September 1 and will be released in weekly episodes on Monday evenings on BBC One. However, some fans who couldn’t wait have already rushed to iPlayer to binge watch all four episodes.

The show has received a lot of praise online with many viewers and critics raving about the unexpected surprises in the plot.

TV critic Scott Bryan said: “The Guest on BBC One is the most unhinged show this side of Christmas. Completely loved it. Great characters and funny one-liners. Matthew Harry has done it again.”

How many episodes are there and where can I watch it?

The Guest, written by the multi-award winning writer, Matthew Barry, will air weekly on Monday’s at 9pm on BBC One over the next three weeks.

The show’s first episode debuted on BBC one and iPlayer on September 1.

However, for those who prefer to binge watch shows, all four episodes of the programme are currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

Plot

The gripping four-part series tells the story of Fran and Ria whose lives have become dangerously interlocked by shared secrets and an obsessive co-dependence.

Their relationship, described as a psychological game of cat-and-mouse”, becomes dangerous and manipulative.

The official synopsis for The Guest reads: “The Guest is a fast-paced story that centres on the toxic and beguiling relationship between a successful business owner, Fran (Eve Myles), and her employee, Ria (Gabrielle Creevy).

“Ria has never had the time or opportunity to think about what she might actually want from the world. So, when she starts cleaning for Fran, she’s intoxicated by this confident and self-assured woman who encourages her to take control of her life, and when Ria flourishes, an intense friendship is forged.

“However, when Fran’s advice leads to a shocking event, the lives of these two very different women become intertwined by shared secrets and dangerous plots. What follows is a compelling and manipulative game of cat and mouse. But just who is playing who?”

Filming locations

The Guest is filmed and set in Wales and most of the filming took place in Cardiff.

Grade two listed building, Whiston Court, located in Goldcliff, Newport, is used as the main building for Fran’s impressive house, Maybury Court.

The cast have applauded the locations used in Cardiff, Rhossili Bay and the surrounding areas in Wales, in particular the opportunity to film at the beautiful Whitson Court.

Eve Myles, who plays Fran in the show, said: “Maybury Court is a beautiful home, the land around it is stunning, and it’s filled with all types of animals, there’s peacocks and donkeys and cockerels.

“It’s an oasis of otherworldliness which lends itself to the otherworldliness of The Guest.”

Meanwhile, Ria star Gabrielle Creevy said: “When you first see those gates open, it feels almost magical, like stepping into a fairy tale or a grand castle. It’s that feeling of wonder you get when you’re younger, imagining what it would be like to live in a place like that.

“That is exactly how Ria feels when she first sees it, it’s like her chance at a new life. The location is stunning; the grounds are vast, and the landscape of Wales looks beautiful. It really adds a layer of charm and mystery to the story.”
