The Scots are hoping to build on their draw against Denmark with victory against the group minnows

The World Cup charge is well and truly on after a positive result in Denmark – but it counts for nothing without a first win on the board against Belarus.

Steve Clarke‘s side got off to a strong start in the qualifying phase with a credible 0-0 draw, with Grant Hanley picking up the man of the match award after a steely performance from the visitors.

And the Tartan Army will be on their travels again on Monday night with the Scots in action against Belarus. Clarke’s men will however face the Eastern European nation in Zalaegerszeg, Hungary, due to Belarus’ involvement in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The two sides will meet for the first time in 20 years, and the most recent encounters didn’t go too well for Scotland. Belarus claimed a shock 1-0 win at Hampden in October 2005 during the qualification campaign for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, having held Walter Smith’s team to a goalless draw in Minsk.

Scotland did however come out on top on both occasions during the successful push to reach the World Cup in France eight years earlier, scoring a 4-1 home victory at home and a 1-0 triumph on the road to qualify for our most recent appearance on the world’s biggest stage to date.

And while Scotland missed out on a place at the 2022 World Cup in agonising circumstances, Clarke will hope his players can replicate the kind of displays that saw them book their spot at Euro 2024 with a game to spare and give the Tartan Army what has eluded them for all these years.
