Architecture for London has completed the renovation of a five-storey Georgian townhouse on Albert Street, Camden, returning the building to use as a single-family home after years of subdivision and alteration.

Originally built around 200 years ago, the house had been converted to a nursery and later a house in multiple occupation with eight bedrooms, which resulted in the loss of original features. The project reinstated key historic details while introducing a new rear extension and a flexible layout to accommodate extended family visits.

The project, led by project architect Amrit Marway, was on site from October 2023 to August 2024 and delivered a gross internal floor area of 280sqm.

The reinstated first floor serves as the principal living space, with a kitchen and dining room finished in oak and Mazzorbo honed green terrazzo supplied by Design Driven. Original floorboards have been exposed, and period joinery and details restored.

A two-storey rear extension adds further living and dining areas, distinguished by rotary cut and flatsawn Douglas fir ceilings. A courtyard lightwell separates the extension from the original rear facade, restoring its proportions.

External works included reinstating decorative wrought iron balustrades and a period front door to the street elevation. Portland Stone was used for external paving.

Specification was central to the refurbishment, with lighting by Orluna, beech flooring from Junckers and quarry tiles supplied by Ketley.

The layout provides flexibility for multi-generational living: additional kitchens on the lower ground and top floors allow these levels to operate semi-independently during family visits.

Architecture for London acted as both architect and interior designer on the project.
