THE FAMILY of a Birmingham poet and musician have paid tribute to him after his body was sadly discovered after a fire at a building in Hockley.

Louis Campbell, aged 63, who was also known as Louis Poet, has been formally identified following the blaze in Barr Street on 17 August.

West Midlands Police say his family are being supported at this most awful of times and are being kept updated by officers as we work with colleagues from West Midlands Fire Service to establish the circumstances.

It can now be confirmed that the fire in Hockley was not deliberate.

However, a man in his 60s was arrested on Wednesday 3rd September, on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. He has been released on police bail as enquiries continue.

Today, Mr Campbell’s heartbroken family shared this tribute to him and said: “We are devastated by the sudden and unexpected passing of our much-loved Louis Campbell, known to many as Louis Poet.

“He was truly one of a kind — cherished amongst his brothers and sisters and a devoted uncle to many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Also, Mr Campbell’s family shared that he helped shape Birmingham’s music and poetry scene.

They continued: “He shared a loving, long-term partnership with Kirsty, who knew him as a steadfast companion and constant support. Beyond family, Louis was a vibrant presence in Birmingham’s music and poetry scene.

“With his studio in the heart of the city, he opened doors for others, mentoring new talent and creating a space where creativity could thrive.

“From performing with International Beat to countless open-mic nights in many of our city’s pubs and venues, his voice and spirit brought people together.

“We, his brothers, sisters and family, will miss him more than words can ever express. His absence has left us heartbroken, and we are struggling to come to terms with such a devastating loss.”

The family added: “We would like to thank the fire service and police for their hard work and for the continued support we are receiving through our police liaison officer.

“Their guidance has been invaluable in helping us through this difficult time, and we deeply appreciate the care and professionalism they have shown.”
