Renovations, agreed by councillors, aim to ensure the council’s civic home remains fit for purpose for at least the next 20 years.

The building has not received any significant investment or upgrades to much of its core infrastructure since its construction in 1980.

Many of its original fittings are still in place, including windows, employee welfare facilities, internal finishes, ICT and electrical infrastructure.

To ensure the building can continue to deliver for employees and residents, the work will include accessibility improvements to the chamber, electrical and ICT upgrades, window replacements, bathroom refurbishments and installation of shower facilities.

During the refurbishment, employees and councillors will operate from various other council buildings, such as those in Barrhead, Spiersbridge and Eastwood House.

Customer First and Registration services will move to the Spiersbridge office, Thornliebank, from September 22.

Councillors will operate from Eastwood House, with unchanged telephone numbers.

On September 25, the full council will meet at Eastwood HQ.

Subsequently, council and committee meetings will be held at Eastwood House.

Due to space constraints, public gallery access will not be available, but full council meetings will still be webcast live and published on the council’s YouTube channel.

Committee meetings will be recorded and published on the council’s YouTube channel.

It is anticipated the refurbishment will conclude with the building’s full reopening and return of public services by July 2026.

At that stage, the council plans to exit the current leased Spiersbridge office, which will yield significant long-term savings.
