Watkin Jones, a developer and manager of residential for rent, has received approval from Bristol City Council for a 322-bed purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) development in the city.

The scheme will include commercial space at ground floor level, heat source air pumps, an electric heating system and PV panels to allow the scheme to connect to the forthcoming local District Heat Network.

The development, known as The Ionic, will be Watkin Jones’ third in the regeneration area of Temple Quarter and is a short walk away from Temple Meads railway station.

The firm is also developing a nearby 204-bed PBSA scheme for Moorfield Group and Tiger Developments.

The site is located within the Silverthorne Lane Conservation Area and aims to ‘enhance the area’s heritage’, according to the developer.

Ben Wrighton, Head of Planning & Development at Watkin Jones, said: “Securing planning consent for this scheme tackles Bristol’s student housing shortage.

By delivering high-quality homes in a key growth area, we are helping to ease housing pressure and support a more sustainable, inclusive city, reinforcing Watkin Jones’ Future Foundations strategy and Bristol’s vision for economic vitality, community wellbeing, and placemaking.”

The scheme is expected to be completed in time for the 2028/29 academic year.
