Brentford Fruit and vegetable market circa 1969

2025 marks 60 years of the London Borough of Hounslow and this autumn the Council is hosting a free exhibition for residents to enjoy.

Launching at Hounslow Library on Monday 15 September, the photography exhibition will showcase what the London Borough of Hounslow looked like in the 1960s. The exhibition will also include contemporary photos that highlight how Hounslow’s diverse and lively borough has changed, with new architecture and activities in 2025.

Following the London Government Act 1963, the municipal boroughs of Brentford and Chiswick, Heston and Isleworth, and Feltham Urban District were combined into the single borough of Hounslow.

Councillor Salman Shaheen, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Public Spaces at Hounslow Council, said:

I am extremely proud of Hounslow’s rich cultural heritage and I would strongly encourage residents to attend this exhibition.

I was impressed to learn that the Council managed the M4 motorway in the 1960s and that Brentford was London’s second biggest fruit and vegetable market, only surpassed by Covent Garden!

Other highlights include the borough’s link with London’s iconic red buses, which were built, repaired and maintained at Chiswick Works between 1921 and 1990.

After its launch at Hounslow library, the exhibition is on the road visiting the following libraries:

  • Bedfont Library Wednesday 15 October – Friday 14 November 2025
  • Brentford Library Monday 17 November – Wednesday 24 December 2025
  • Feltham Library Monday 5 January – Friday 30 January 2026
