A 78-year-old man from Cardiff has fallen victim to a scam after a man turned up at his doorstep pretending to a police officer. It happened on Monday in the St Mellons area of the city.
This latest incident comes after an 80-year-old man from Riverside had £16,000 allegedly stolen from his home last week. Police said the man received a call convincing him he was speaking to police officers before telling him to withdraw £16,000 in cash.
Police explained that someone then allegedly arrived at the house and snatched it from his hands.
Nawaf Abdullahi, from Islington in London, has been charged in connection with both incidents. For the biggest stories in Wales first, sign up to our daily newsletter here.
Abdullahi appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, September 11, charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation and participating in the criminal activities of an organised crime group.
The 20-year-old was remanded in custody for a further hearing at Cardiff Crown Court next month.
Detective Superintendent Tom Moore, from South Wales Police, said: “This investigation highlights our commitment to protecting the vulnerable from fraud.
“As always we urge people to remain vigilant, to look out for vulnerable relatives and report incidents to police.”
South Wales Police have also reiterated their message that genuine police will never send a courier to your home to collect cash, bank cards, or any other valuable goods.
Police will also never ask you to participate in an investigation that requires you to withdraw money from your bank.
