Chelsea have made an unbeaten start to the Premier League this season, but John Terry believes the club needs to sign a player like Liverpool before they can start competing for the title on a yearly basis.
Terry admitted that he thinks the Premier League title is Liverpool’s to lose this season, despite the investment made into Enzo Maresca’s side this summer.
Arne Slot’s team were the highest spenders this summer in the Premier League, with Arne Slot being massively backed with some big money signings in a bid to retain the title.
But after the Blues pushed back into the top four last season, the club are expected to continue moving forward, with the next obvious step being to challenge for the Premier League once again.

Chelsea spent £296.5million throughout the summer transfer window to improve the squad for this season, but the former club captain believes the team are still missing out on a major name.
Terry explained to talkSPORT that he believes the club needs to get back in the mix for marquee signings, such as Alexander Isak, who just joined Liverpool for a British transfer record of £125million.
He said: “I’m not sure Isak’s coming to Chelsea, but I’d love to see us in the mix with those types of signings if we want to be back at our very, very best at the top winning Premier League’s year after year. I think that’s the only thing we are probably missing at the moment is those marquee signings.”
Isak is seen as one of the best strikers in world football right now, and Liverpool breaking the bank to get him in the squad is a sign of just how much he can offer a team.
Terry recently revealed how the signing of Gianfranco Zola made him go, “wow,” at the time, and it’s clear that he wants to see the club get back to that level of statement purchases.
Chelsea have had no problem signing marquee names in the past, with the likes of Fernando Torres, Romelu Lukaku, and Eden Hazard all joining the club while the world was talking about them.
Chelsea strengthened the squad in the summer transfer market
Even though Chelsea haven’t signed a staple marquee name this summer, that hasn’t stopped the club from being highly active in the transfer market.
Chelsea strengthened the attacking department by signing Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, who have hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge, providing Maresca with more firepower.
Meanwhile, the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Gittens, and Jorrel Hato have all joined the squad and are bedding in nicely, with the Blues unbeaten in their first three games.
However, the season’s surprise has been Estevao Willian, as the teenager has been lighting up Stamford Bridge with some scintillating performances.
The Brazilian scored his first international goal during the recent break, and could prove Terry wrong because not every impactful signing needs to be a marquee name.
Much like Cole Palmer did after joining from Manchester City, Estevao could end up making himself a household name through his performances, making his signing even more impressive.
