A Motherwell woman has been appointed the new chief executive officer of the UK’s only multi-disciplinary Royal College.
Following a competitive recruitment process, Dr Linda Irvine will lead the 425-year-old Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
Dr Irvine has more than 25 years of experience in senior leadership roles and has previously been the College’s deputy CEO and director of membership and engagement.
Since February 2024, she has been interim CEO, leading the College in achieving greater financial sustainability, growing its global membership and increasing the provision of high-quality education and assessment.

Dr Irvine said: “It’s an enormous privilege to lead the College team and work with our fantastic community of physicians, surgeons, dentists, travel medicine and podiatric medicine specialists.
“At a time of continuous change in healthcare, it has never been more important that we provide the education, training and services our members need to succeed at every stage of their careers.
“We are building on excellent foundations: 425 years of innovation, standing up for the professions and nurturing the health service workforce. I am excited to work with the president, trustees, clinical volunteers, fellows and members as we move into our next chapter.”

“She is an outstanding leader with a proven track record, excellent knowledge of our sector, and a genuine drive to create the best possible experience for our fellows and members.

Founded in 1599, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow provides education and training to support healthcare professionals throughout their careers, and elevates standards through ‘gold-standard’ assessment.
For 425 years, its members and fellows have been responsible for some of the most profound developments in healthcare while improving the health of millions of people in Glasgow, across the UK and around the world.
Today, it has more than 15,000 members and fellows in 100 countries. In January, it published Strategy 2025: a plan to support a healthy, inclusive and sustainable society.
