Camlins Landscape Architects has opened a new studio in the heart of Birmingham as part of its continued growth.

The practice has taken space at 102 Colmore Row, strengthening its presence in the Midlands while maintaining its headquarters in Shrewsbury. Camlins said the move reflects both its ambitious growth trajectory and its confidence in the opportunities across the Midlands and beyond.

The Birmingham studio will be led by associate director Sam Baker, formerly studio manager in Shrewsbury.

Baker said: “It’s a real privilege to be given the opportunity to lead our new Birmingham studio. I’m really excited about building a talented new team here, strengthening our connections and working hard to continue developing our presence and reputation across the region.”

Founded more than 40 years ago, Camlins is reportedly one of the UK’s most respected landscape architecture studios, with a portfolio spanning civic, cultural, residential and regeneration projects. The practice said in a statement that it became 100% employee-owned in October 2024, reflecting its ethos of collaboration, creativity and shared responsibility.

Mark Dunn, managing director of Camlins, added: “Birmingham has always been a city we’ve been closely involved with, and opening a studio here reflects both our growth as a practice and our confidence in the opportunities across the Midlands.

“Becoming employee-owned last year was a transformative moment for us, giving every member of the team a stake in our future and the launch of a new studio is part of that journey in terms of developing our existing team while also building our offer through recruitment.

“With HS2 on the horizon, Birmingham is set to become one of the best-connected cities in the UK outside of London. That will only accelerate the growth and ambition we’re already seeing, and we’re delighted to be part of that story.”

Dunn said the move will enable Camlins to collaborate more closely with architects, developers and local authorities in the region and attract new talent from Birmingham’s rich pool of design expertise.

The new Birmingham base builds on a long history of work in the region. Camlins was central to the remodelling of West Bromwich town centre. It is also currently landscape architect for one of Birmingham’s tallest residential schemes at 100 Broad Street, the redevelopment of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and the transformational Coventry City Centre South project.

Elsewhere in the UK, the practice has helped deliver some of the country’s most significant regeneration projects, from leading the public realm strategy at Ancoats in Manchester to a series of key spaces across Liverpool city centre, and more recently, playing a lead role in shaping London’s emerging Nine Elms district.
