Sheffield United have approached former manager Chris Wilder about a sensational return to Bramall Lane this season, The Star journalist Danny Hall has revealed.

The Blades are said to have sounded out the 57-year-old tactician amid uncertainty growing over Ruben Selles’ future after a 5-0 defeat at Ipswich Town on Friday evening.

The result means Sheffield United have opened a season with five successive league defeats for just the second time in their history, and those in the Bramall Lane boardroom are believed to be running out of patience with Selles after a poor start.

As well as a change in the dugout, the Blades are also said to be privately considering installing a football representative above the manager, in a technical director/director of football-type role.

Hall claims it is currently unclear for which role Wilder is being considered, but the prospect of his third spell at Bramall Lane has been discussed internally at the club.

According to Hall, pressure is mounting on Selles after a 5-0 loss at Ipswich on Friday, with Sheffield United now considering bringing Wilder back to the club:

Selles, who is now overseeing the club’s worst start to a season for 30 years, insisted he still has the support of the club’s board following the 5-0 humiliation at Ipswich on Friday.

The Spanish tactician replaced Wilder in the Bramall Lane dugout in June, after the latter failed to secure an immediate return to the Premier League last season, finishing third in the Championship but losing to Sunderland in the play-off final.

Sheffield sit rock bottom of the Championship standings after five games, having scored only once and conceded 12 goals – more than any other club in the division.

Wilder first took over at Bramall Lane in May 2016 and guided the club to the League One title in his first season in charge.

He won promotion to the Premier League two years later, leading Sheffield United to ninth in their first season back in the top flight.
