It seemed a bizarre decision to sack Chris Wilder after he took Sheffield United to the Championship playoff final last season.

Even more extraordinary was the club’s decision to appoint Ruben Selles as Wilder’s replacement.

Selles had just been sacked as Hull City’s manager and has now had a dreadful start to his time at Bramall Lane.

The Blades have lost their opening five Championship games, which included a 5-0 drubbing by Ipswich Town last night.

This result has mounted the pressure on Selles. According to Football Insider, “Wilder could make a sensational return as Sheffield United manager.”

Will Sheffield United appoint Chris Wilder for a third time?

Wilder is Sheffield United through and through. They are his boyhood club; he had two stints there as a player and has had two spells as their manager.

Under Wilder, the Blades have won League One and then achieved promotion to the Premier League by finishing second in the Championship.

In the Premier League, Wider guided Sheffield United to a ninth-place finish, but was then sacked after a poor start to the following campaign.

He then managed Middlesbrough and Watford before retaking charge of the Blades. He has been out of work since his sacking at the end of last season.

The Sheffield United hierarchy will have to eat humble pie if they are to take Wilder back on. However, they are in a needs must situation, given the club’s position at the foot of the Championship right now.
