British holidaymakers jetting off to the USA have been hit with a stark new fee warning as the cost to enter the country is poised to nearly double from the end of this month.

The US government has given the green light to fresh legislation that will see the application charge for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) surge from $21 to $40 on Tuesday, September 30 – almost twice the existing rate.

Therefore, if you’re plotting a trip across the pond in the coming two years, it’s absolutely worth submitting your ESTA application right now before the fee adjustment at month’s end to secure the present $21 charge per individual, enabling you to sidestep the price jump for the following couple of years.

When an ESTA receives approval it stays active for two years from that point, or until your passport runs out, whichever occurs earlier.

Consequently, once the ESTA gains approval you can journey to the US numerous times during the valid timeframe without needing to pay for renewal each occasion, provided you’re travelling via the Visa Waiver Program, which covers visits of 90 days or fewer, reports the Express.

MoneySavingExpert cautions: “The US government is hiking the ESTA fee from $21 to $40 on Tuesday 30 September.

“If you’re visiting the States (even if just passing through an airport) in the next two years, apply for your ESTA as soon as possible, to lock in at $21 per person. ESTAs approved prior to the increase are still valid for two years or until passport expiry, whichever comes first.

“Do note it’s the approval date, not the application date, that decides if you’ll pay the increased fee. As approvals take up to 72 hours, apply well before the 30 September deadline.”

North America travel specialists Journeyscape advise submitting your ESTA application at least a week prior to departure, as the approval process can take up to 72 hours, providing ample time to resolve any issues.

Holidaymakers must ensure they use only the official ESTA website when applying, as third-party services can impose hefty additional charges.

The current application fee stands at $21, but this will rise to $40 on September 30, with many unofficial sites charging considerably more whilst providing no extra benefits.

Kerry Manley, Head of Marketing at Journeyscape, explained: “Navigating the ESTA process can indeed be smooth and hassle-free if you take a proactive approach. The key is to apply early, ideally at least a week before your departure, to account for any unexpected delays.

“Using the official ESTA website is crucial to avoid unnecessary fees or scams. Double-checking your details – such as passport information and travel itinerary – can prevent common mistakes that lead to denials.

“Additionally, staying informed about recent rule changes is essential, especially for travellers who may be affected by the latest restrictions, such as those related to travel history in Cuba.

“Even with a valid ESTA, remember that entry to the US is ultimately determined at the border by Customs and Border Protection. Be prepared to answer questions about your travel purpose and itinerary. Following these steps will help ensure a seamless travel experience, minimising stress and maximising your trip’s success.”
