The three times Motor Transport haulier of the year winner said the purchase represented a significant milestone for the group, helping with its expansion strategy as well as delivering benefits to customers.

It added that with both businesses sharing a heritage of being family-led, the acquisition was a natural fit.

Matthew Kilner, Expect Distribution MD, said: “Longs of Leeds is a respected name in the industry and we’re excited to welcome them into the Expect Distribution Group family.

“This acquisition not only strengthens our capabilities but also reinforces our commitment to providing flexible, high-quality logistics solutions to businesses across the UK.”

Andrew Long, exiting MD at Longs, added: “The time is right to pass the business onto new owners who can take it forward and onto its next chapter.

“I believe the business will continue to grow and thrive under its new owners.”

Longs of Leeds can trace its beginnings back to 1918 after Joe Long – Andrew’s grandfather – returned from the First World War.

It currently holds an international licence authorising 105 HGVs and 200 trailers.

Expect is based in Bradford and employs over 450 staff across three sites in the West Yorkshire city, as well as at its Colchester-based business, Pallet Plus.
