RSPCA East London and Havering is urging people to consider fostering or adopting cats after seeing an influx of unwanted pets – alongside a drop in adoptions.

The branch – which looks after cats only – received 81 calls to take in unwanted felines in July, but only five cats were rehomed that month.

Branch volunteer Natalie Chopra said this is the lowest number of adoptions the branch can recall, leaving them “absolutely full to capacity with cats”.

Natalie told the Recorder: “Every single day we get calls, emails and social media requests to take in cats.

“The pandemic of stray and abandoned cats isn’t something we can manage alone.

“We have a limited number of spaces, and the number of cats needing homes is overwhelming.”

She urged east London residents to offer shelter, warmth and food to stray cats if found, and to consider becoming a fosterer.

“Helping a cat find their way to a loving home is incredibly rewarding,” Natalie added.

“Above all, if you’re thinking of getting a cat – choose rescue.

“Centres across the UK are full.

“Every adoption creates space for another animal in need.”

Among the cats still waiting for adoption at RSPCA East London and Havering are Audrey and Alexia, who have been in their care since June 30.

Despite being healthy, loving and friendly, the branch said the pair have had “no interest”.
