Cunard’s flagship Queen Mary 2 will return to Liverpool this week. The call by the world’s only ocean liner will mark the 185th anniversary of Cunard’s first transatlantic crossing departing Liverpool in 1840.
The city will host Queen Mary 2 (QM2) for a two-night stay as part of her 12-night British Isles voyage departing Southampton on September 14. The flagship will arrive at Liverpool following a call at Cobh, southern Ireland and depart bound for Oban, Scotland.
She is expected to arrive in the city on Wednesday, September 17 and depart on Friday, September 19. Liverpool is set to host a series of celebratory events to honour Cunard’s 185th anniversary– marking a historic milestone in the city’s long-standing relationship with the world-renowned cruise line.

What events are taking place during her stay?
Civic reception at Liverpool Town Hall
There will be a formal welcome for Captain Tomás Connery and senior officers at 4.30pm on Thursday, September 18. This is to recognise Cunard’s enduring connection to the city and Freedom of the City status, which was granted in recognition of their historic role in maritime heritage.
Guided tours of the Cunard Building
QM2 passengers and the public with be given exclusive behind-the-scenes access across both days. This ticketed activity will allow visitors to explore the hidden history of the Grade II* listed building, including the luggage room, first-class safe, and original wood-panelled rooms. Pop-up Liverpool Market
A pop-up market will host more than 40 stalls featuring local food, drink, crafts and art inside the Cunard Building’s Grand Arrivals Hall for the first time, along with a small selection outside (weather permitting). Open 10am-5pm on September 18-19. Free entry.
Sail away moment
In partnership with Liverpool Cruise Port, there will be a brief pyrotechnic moment to mark the occasion to coincide with the ship departure time at around 8.30pm.
