Bricks fell down onto a pavement from an abandoned building resulting in a road closure being put in place. Emergency services were called to Seaforth Road on Saturday following reports of an unsafe building.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said its crews were first alerted to the issue at 11.58am and were on the scene seven minutes later with a fire engine and an aerial appliance.

Crews found bricks from an abandoned three-storey building had fallen onto the pavement below. Crews cordoned off the area and requested assistance.

A Sefton Council structural engineer assessed the building’s safety and Merseyside Police was in place to manage road closures.

A local man who notified the ECHO about the ongoing issue said: “The building has been in a very bad state for years after a fire and was left to rot. Now it’s started to crumble.

“Locals around here think it’s going to collapse and it was lucky no-one was injured this time.”

Pictures taken by the ECHO at the scene show a significant amount of brick debris littering the ground on the pavement. Police and fire service tape blocks off the area directly below the building.

A takeaway pizza restaurant directly next door to the affected building remained open this evening. The ECHO understands the abandoned building used to be a shoe shop.

Fire crews used the aerial appliance to allow structural engineers to access the building, confirming it was in an unsafe condition.

A fire service spokesperson said: “Road closures and cordons will remain in place until Monday when a further assessment will take place.”
